Spot has recalled the SPOT Satellite Communicator (on the left) because it fails to send messages in cold weather.
Spot is recalling its SPOT Satellite Communicator, a device that was supposed to allow the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS to send and receive text messages from the backcountry via satellite.
A part which “does not meet operating specifications, was substituted in some SPOT Satellite Communicator devices during the manufacturing process,” the company explained in the recall.
“In certain incidents,” it continued, “intended messages may not be transmitted, including requests for help or emergency assistance, when the SPOT Satellite Communicator is used at temperatures below 40 degrees Farhrenheit/4.44 degrees Celsius.”
Yeah, that could be a problem. If you own one of these dodgy devices, visit the SPOT website for instructions on how to remedy the situation.
SPOT noted that the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS works fine, as does the SPOT Connect, its newer device that allows wilderness travelers to communicate through their smartphones via satellite in the backcountry.
