In the recent article Jonathan Stalls contributed to STRAY about his walk across the United States, he included a photo of his trusty sidekick Kanoa sporting dog booties.

Clearly Jonathan was concerned about the wear and tear of asphalt on Kanoa’s furry feet. But what about snow and ice?

Dogs can’t just lay around all winter, gnawing on bones and watching reruns of Lassie. They like to get outside, too. On the other hand, they’re not all so naturally winter-proofed as huskies.

Polar Trex winter dog boots

To prevent frozen paws, Bend, Oregon-based dog gear maker, Ruff Wear, has released Polar Trex, a line of winter boots for dogs.

The boots feature Vibram soles to provide traction on slippery surfaces and a soft durable shell that is weather-resistant, wind-resistant and breathable.

A reinforced gaiter extends up the leg for extra protection.

A set of four – don’t call it a pair – runs $89.95. Various sizes are available, but they all come in red.

The company also released an updated version of its Cloud Chaser jackets for dogs. The new jackets feature water- and wind-proof fabric in the shell and a breathable fleece lining.

They come in gray and red and cost $74.95. The well-bred fellow above chose a red jacket to match his boots. Classy!
