Jordan Romero, 13, summits Everest on May 22, 2010, becoming the youngest person to climb the highest mountain in the world.

Jordan Romero, a 13-year-old California boy, summited Mt. Everest on Saturday May 22, 2010, becoming the youngest person to climb the mountain. Romero, who reached the top with his father, Paul Romero, a helicopter paramedic, called his mother Leigh Anne Drake from the peak via satellite phone, according to the Associated Press.

“He says, ‘Mom, I’m calling you from the top of the world,’” she told The Associated Press from California.

On Monday, Romero conducted other interviews from Advances Base Camp where his party was resting after returning from the summit. “The record is one thing, but standing on top of the world is just the best feeling you could ever imagine,” he told reporters.

With his summit of Everest, Romero has now climbed six of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, a quest he began with Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at age 10. He hopes to climb the last of the seven summits, Vinson Massif in Antarctica, in December or January.

Romero’s feat comes just days after an Jessica Watson, a 16-year-old Australian girl, became the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around world.
