Sarah Outen, seen here on a previous paddling trip across the Indian Ocean, plans to circumnavigate the globe by boat and bike.

Sarah Outen, a 25-year-old British woman, was scheduled to leave London today by kayak, launching an attempt to circumnavigate the globe by paddling and biking.

Outen plans to travel 20,000 miles across three oceans and two continents using a specialized ocean-going rowboat, a sea kayak and a touring bike. She expects to row back into London sometime in the fall of 2013.

“My journey is all about human power – to make a complete loop of our planet using only a rowing boat, a bike and a kayak,” she writes on her website. “It is simple in theory, but in practice it will be monumentally challenging. The distance, the logistics, the unknowns, extreme climates – it will be huge in all respects. But it will also be an incredible experience with lots of stories, which my team and I plan to share with people all over the world.”

Previously, she was the youngest person, at 24, and the only woman to row across the Indian Ocean alone.
