Bicycle League recognizes 16 bicycle-friendly communities

The League of American Bicyclists has released its spring 2010 list of US communities that are bicycle friendly.

The non-profit bicycle advocacy group added 16 towns and cities to its Bicycle Friendly Communities list. The majority of the communities are in the East and Midwest, although Flagstaff, Arizona, and Saltlake City, Utah, were upgraded from bronze to silver status.

“Communities from all areas of the country, climates and populations see bicycling as an integral component of building livable communities,” Andy Clarke, president of the league stated in the announcement of the list. “The Bicycle Friendly Community program is recognizing those leading the way,”

Communities were judged in five categories – engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation and planning.

The new honorees were :

  • Albany, OR
  • Davidson, NC
  • Dayton, OH
  • Franklin, PA
  • Lansing, MI
  • Marquette,
  • Newark, DE
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Portage, MI
  • Ridgeland, MS
  • Roanoke, VA
  • Rochester, MN
  • Simsbury, CT
  • Spokane, WA
  • Springfield, MO
  • Urbana, IL
  • Chico, CA
  • Austin, TX
  • Flagstaff, AZ
  • Gainesville, FL
  • Salt Lake City, UT

The addition of the 16 new entrants, brings the total list to 140 communities. The three cities with the highest designation of “platinum” are Boulder, Colorado, Davis, California, and Portland, Oregon.
